Beginning Jan. 1, Oregon egg producers must comply with a new law requiring a minimum of 67 square inches of space for every egg-laying hen. The minimum space requirement is the first phase of a new law that lawmakers adopted in 2011. The law requires egg producers submit a farm plan in June for how they plan to meet the law's long-term goals. It also stipulates that the Oregon Department of Agriculture beginning in 2015 will start inspecting hen houses to ensure producers are complying with the law.
