Peter Senn Dies at Age 77

Thursday, April 12, 2007 11:05 AM CDT

Peter Senn, Campbellsport, former WFBF board member and head of the state ASCS, died on April 3.

Peter was a director on the county and state Farm Bureau boards in the 60's and 70's. He was actively involved in politics, and in 1976, the Senn family hosted President Ford, gave him a farm tour and served him breakfast during his campaign swing through Wisconsin. From 1983 to 1992, he was appointed state executive director of ASCS in Madison.

"Peter was a solid leader for Wisconsin agriculture and for the Farm Bureau," said Bill Bruins, president of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau. "Peter's passion for farming was always evident in every leadership opportunity he had."

Peter, 77, unexpectedly went home to be with his Lord while doing what he loved - working on the farm.

He was born in Fond du Lac on Aug. 16, 1929, the son of the late Peter and Helen Landt Senn.

As a boy, Peter was active in the Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended Campbellsport public schools, except for his freshman and sophomore years, in which he attended Nathan Hale in West Allis. He graduated from CHS in 1947. He attended the Farm and Industry Short Course at UW-Madison.

Peter was drafted into the U.S. Army, and while on a delay en route, he married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Leverne A. Ablard on Oct. 5, 1951, at Ebenezer Evangelical United Brethen Church in rural Lomira.

Peter and Leverne started Senland Farm at its present location in the town of Ashford. There they started their family and raised four children.

Peter was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Lomira, where he served on the building committee for the present church.

Peter is survived by his wife Leverne; his children, James (Deborah) Senn of Campbellsport, Deborah (Larry) Pollack of Ripon, Mary Beth (Paul) Schlecht of Franklin and Daniel (Kimberly) Senn of Springfield, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, Tracy, Theodore and Travis Senn, Christopher and Crystal Pollack, Angela and Adam Schlecht and Rebecca, Daniel, Samuel, David and Rachel Senn; a brother, John (Louise) Roth of West Bend; a sister-in-law, Lila Ebert of Lomira; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Esther Roth; and a brother-in-law, Jon Ebert.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 7 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lomira. Burial followed at Union Cemetery in Campbellsport.

Memorials may be directed to Trinity United Methodist Church, the American Heart Association or the Campbellsport Scholarship Foundation.
