Attendance was up at the 2006 World Dairy Expo held last week at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison as just over 65,560 people visited the world-renown show.
Over 2,131 were guests from 80 foreign countries. The dairy cattle show, the main attraction to many who attended World Dairy Expo, had 2,259 cattle on the grounds this year. Breaking down the animals exhibited by breed, there were 216 Ayrshires, 371 Brown Swiss, 211 Guernseys, 544 Holsteins, 331 Jerseys, 234 Milking Shorthorn and 216 Red & Whites. The cattle were shown by 994 exhibitors from 39 states. Also on grounds were 136 sale lots composed of 19 Ayrshires, 36 Brown Swiss, 21 Guernseys, 41 Holsteins and 19 Jerseys.
Supreme
Huronia Centurion Veronica 20J, exhibited by Arethusa Farm of Litchfield, Conn., captured Supreme Champion of the World Dairy Expo. Named as the 2006 Grand Champion of the Central National Jersey Show for the third year in a row, Veronica finally rose to the top of World Dairy Expo this year. She competed against six other breed champions for the coveted honor.
Veronica's owner, Arethusa Farm, has exhibited the Supreme Champion before with Hillcroft Leader Melanie in 2004. That year Arethusa went into the history books as they exhibited the Supreme Champion, Melanie, and the Reserve Supreme Champion, Veronica, in the same year. They have been the only exhibitor in World Dairy Expo's 40-year history to do so.
This year's Supreme Champion is sired by Sooner Centurion-ET and her dam is Genesis Renaissance Vivianne. Veronica produced a 305-day record of 21,352 pounds of milk, 1,205 pounds of fat and 835 pounds of protein at 4 years of age.
Along with the coveted Supreme Championship, Veronica's owners also received a 2006 Toyota Tundra Double Cab pickup truck. Toyota was one of two Five Star Sponsors for the 2006 World Dairy Expo.
Reserve Supreme Champion went to the Holstein, Kinyon Linjet Ideal. Exhibited by Martin Kinyon and Mark Reuth of Oxford, Ideal is sired by Sunnylodge Linjet-ET and her dam is Kinyon Blackstar Idaho. The Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show produced a 365-day record of 44,943 pounds of milk, 2,700 pounds of fat and 1,600 pounds of protein. She was previously nominated All-American as a 4-year-old in 2004.
Exhibited by Amanda Curtis of Anna, Ohio, Smart Nate Gunner Cher topped all other breeds as this year's Supreme Champion of the Junior Show. Cher is sired by Smart J Imp Nate Gunner and her dam is Wheat Acres Regal Cheryl. Reserve Supreme Champion went to the Holstein, Shephard-Farms Aero Ruby. Collin Abraham of Livingston, Calif., exhibited Ruby who is sired by Oliveholme Aeroline-TW-ET. Her dam is Shephard-Farms Jackpot Rae.
Ayrshire
For the second consecutive year Valevue BBK Minerva was tapped Grand Champion of the Central National Ayrshire Show at the 2006 World Dairy Expo. Winning the 4-year-old class, Minerva was exhibited by Steve and Vicki Searles of Stillmore Cattle Company in Pine Island, Minn. Minerva is a daughter of Yellow Briar Patrick's Mint and her sire, Blackaddar BB Kellogg, was also named Premier Sire of the show.
Winning the Reserve Grand Champion Honors was the second place 4-year-old, Maple Dell Zorro Dafourth. David Patrick of Woodbine, Md., exhibited the cow. Dafourth is a Kildare Zorro-ET daughter from D-Maple Dell Ts Dare.
Intermediate Champion honors went to the winning senior 3-year-old, Ski Pal Lot Kally. She was exhibited by David Koss and Allison Koss of Epworth, Iowa.
Onword Bbbk Abigail was named Reserve Intermediate Champion. Owned by Jonna Worden (Schutte) of Oelwein, Iowa, Abigail won the junior 3-year-old cow class.
Maple Dell Bbk Shea-ET was named Junior Champion Female of the show. Owned by Derek Patrick of Woodbine, Md., Shea was the first place winter yearling heifer.
Stephen McDonald of Princeton, Ill., exhibited the Reserve Junior Champion Female, Mackayr Romeo's Pride. Pride was the first prize fall heifer calf.
Palmyra Farm of Hagerstown, Md., was honored for the second year in a row with both Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor honors.
In the junior competition of the Central National Ayrshire Show, Litzenberg Laro Puddin snagged Grand Champion Honors at the 2006 World Dairy Expo. Exhibited by Neil Duncan of Warsaw, Ohio, Puddin is a Des Chamois Pat Laro-ET daughter from Litzengerg Olympic 2 Pixie. Puddin was the first place senior 2-year-old in the junior show.
Honored with Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show was Family Af-Ayr Kellogg Devine-ET. Exhibited by Sarah Borchardt of Caledonia, Ill., Devine was the winning senior 3-year-old. She is sired by Blackaddar Bb Kellogg and her dam is Family-Af-Ayr Frosty Debbie.
Maple-Dell Bbk Ninja was named Junior Champion of the Junior Show. Exhibited by Patrick Murray of Mt. Airy, Md., Ninja was the first place spring yearling heifer.
Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show was Lizenberg Jetstream Bugle exhibited by Neil Duncan of Warsaw, Ohio. Bugle was the winning fall heifer calf.
The 216 entries in the Central National Ayrshire Show were placed by Judge Doug Evans, owner of Sunny Acres in Georgetown, N.Y.
Brown Swiss
A new Grand Champion was crowned at the 2006 Central National Brown Swiss Show. Sunnyisle Colby Twilite-ET, the winning senior 3-year-old, was the first cow to beat Old Mill E Snickerdoodle in four years. Twilite, also named Intermediate Champion, was exhibited by Jeffrey Bold of Whitewater. She is sired by Rolling View Jetway Colby-ET and her dam is Mort Simon Tanya.
Snickerdoodle was named Reserve Grand Champion this year. Winner of the component merit class, Snickerdoodle was exhibited by Allen Bassler, Jr., of Upperville, Va. She is sired by Victory Acres Jubilation Emory and her dam is Old Mill E Cookie.
Reserve Intermediate Champion went to Forest Lawn Anthem Busy, exhibited by Peter Vail and Ken Main of Kinderhook, N.Y. Busy was the second place senior 3-year-old.
The winning pair of winter yearling heifers took the Junior and Reserve Junior Champion Honors. Ja-Ka Hillary Hillbillly, exhibited by Pat Conroy and Don Rottinghaus of Angola, Ind., won Junior Champion. Following her as Reserve Junior Champion was Savage-Leigh Twilight B-ET exhibited by Cory Lewis of Knoxville, Md.
Winning Grand Champion of the Junior Show was Lake Lane Thrice Spice, the winning junior 3-year-old cow of the junior division. She was owned by Brooke Clark of Cornish Flat, N.H.
Voelkers Monaco Alexis was named Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Also the winning 5-year-old, Alexis was exhibited by Suzanne Voelker of Perryville, Mo.
Premier Breeder of the 2006 Central National Brown Swiss Show went to Rex Mort of Pienceton, Ind. Grabbing the Premier Exhibitor banner was Elite Dairy, Peter Vail and Ken Main of Kinderhook, N.Y. Premier Sire of the show was Forest Lawn Simon Jetway.
Judge Larry Tande of Medford, Minn., and Associate Judge William Kelly, III, of Winchester, N.H. placed the 371 Brown Swiss entries.
Guernsey
Grand Champion of the National Guernsey Show-Madison went to Lavon Farms Beau Queenie, exhibited by Lavon Farms of Plano, Texas. Sired by Lavon Farms Lorry Beau-ET, Queenie was the winning 4-year-old. Her dam is Lavon Farms Perfect Queenie.
The winning aged cow, Chupps Farm Goldstar Dazzle, was honored as Reserve Grand Champion. Owned by Tyler Chupp of Inola, Okla., Dazzle is sired by Lily Lane F Tippy Goldstar-ET and her dam is Chupps Farm Glen Dolly.
Branstetters Charming Superstar was the Junior Champion. Superstar, the spring yearling class winner, was exhibited by Kevin Branstetter of Edmonton, Ky.
Reserve Junior Champion went to Lang Haven Tiller Nirvana-ET. She was the winning fall yearling and was exhibited by Frank and Patti Faria of Escalon, Calif.
Grand and Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show went to Green Ridge Regis Halo and Knapps Tiller Hope, both exhibited by Austin and Landen Knapp of Epworth, Iowa. Halo was the winner of the junior 3-year-old class and Hope was the first prize 5-year-old.
Junior Champion of the Junior Show went to Four Winds Tiller Desire exhibited by Aaron Creighton who leased the heifer from Clark and Joy Vilter of Hartland. Desire was the first place winter yearling heifer.
Ashlee Dietz of Southington, Ohio, exhibited the Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show. R-Way Tyler Lex was the winning winter heifer calf.
Earning the Premier Breeder banner was Four Winds Farm, Clark and Joy Vilter of Hartland. Premier Exhibitor went to Austin and Landen Knapp of Epworth, Iowa. The Premier Sire award went to Trotacre Loral Tiller.
Bonnie Ayars of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, placed the 211 Guernseys along with her husband John who served as associate judge.
Holstein
Kinyon Linjet Ideal, the winning aged cow, was named Grand Champion of the International Holstein Show held at the 2006 World Dairy Expo. Ideal is owned by Martin Kinyon and Mark Reuth of Oxford. She is sired by Sunnylodge Linjet-ET and her dam is Kinyon Blackstar Idaho. Ideal was also named Champion Bred & Owned of the show.
Reserve Grand Champion honors went to Elder Creek Durham Blue, the winner of the 5-year-old class. Matt and Mandy Nunes of Scientific Holsteins in Chippewa Falls exhibited Blue. She is sired by Regancrest Elton Durham, who was also named Premier Sire of the show for the fourth consecutive year.
Quality-Ridge Stormi Hazel was named Intermediate Champion Female. Hazel was the winning junior 3-year-old and was exhibited by Deaver, Cunningham, Woodmansee, Binder, Morris and Hoffman of Edgerton.
Reserve Intermediate Champion went to MD-Maple-Dell Roy Image, the second place junior 3-year-old. Image was exhibited by Jeffrey Butler, Ludwig Farms and Mark Butz of Chebanse, Ill.
WM Ariannas PT Aesha, the winning fall heifer calf, was named Junior Champion. Aesha was exhibited by Shannon and Rick Allyn, D. Watts, M. Heath and D. Albright of Canaan, Conn.
Reserve Junior Champion went to Crescentmead Summer Breeze exhibited by Crescentmead, Hetts, Shore and Lintvedt of Ixonia. Summer Breeze was the first prize summer yearling heifer.
Windy Knoll View, James and Nina Burdette of Mercersburg, Pa., earned Premier Breeder of the Show while Rottinghaus Holsteins and Jeffrey Woods of Seneca, Kan., were named Premier Exhibitor.
Judge Dan Doner of Courtice, Ontario and Associate Judge John Martin of Woodstock, Ontario placed the 405 head exhibited in the International Holstein Show.
Topping the International Junior Holstein Show was Shephard-Farms Aero Ruby. The winning 4-year-old cow, Ruby was exhibited by Collin Abraham of Livingston, Calif.
Reserve Grand Champion of the show was A-Jay Durham Jolt Little exhibited by Emily Alsdorf of Spartansburg, Penn. Little was the winning 5-year-old cow.
Rama-Way Skyfame Magical-ET was honored as Junior Champion of the International Junior Holstein Show. Magical, the first prize winter yearling heifer, was owned b Jesse Byma of Ilion, N.Y.
Reserve Junior Champion was the second place winter yearling heifer, La-Foster Astro Allure. Allure was exhibited by Rocco Cunningham of Penngrove, Calif.
Judge Gilbert Texiera of Gil-Tex Holsteins in Turlock, Calif., placed the 139 animals exhibited in the show.
Jersey
Making history at the 2006 World Dairy Expo was Huronia Centurion Veronica 20J as she was named Grand Champion of the Central National Jersey Show for the third time. Veronica, owned by Arethusa Farm of Litchfield, Conn., was the winning entry in the aged cow class. She is a Sooner Centurion-ET daughter from Genesis Renaissance Vivianne.
The winning 4-year-old, Avonlea Konnection Rory, was named Reserve Grand Champion. A daughter of Avonlea Kittens Konnection-ET, Rory is owned by Brandi Stevens of Family Hill Jerseys from Indianapolis, Ind.
Intermediate Champion honors went to the winning senior 3-year-old, Extreme Electra. Electra was exhibited by Entourage Farm, C. Fisher, Diamond C., and J.C. Land of Welch, Okla.
Plain O Remake Daisy-ET was honored as the Reserve Intermediate Champion. Daisy, the winning junior 3-year-old, was exhibited by Roosewood and Pine Creek of Bremen, Ind.
The winning spring yearling heifer, Rockledge Deluxe Lucky Clover, was lucky indeed as she was named Junior Champion. Owned by Quinton Keen of Baldwin City, Kan.
Following Clover as the Reserve Junior Champion was Partee Charity-ET owned by Amber Lynn Elliott of Marshall. Charity was the first place fall yearling heifer.

Junior and Reserve Junior Champion of the Central National Junior Jersey Show also went to the Elliott girls of Marshall. Junior Champion was the winning fall yearling heifer, Partee Charity-ET. Reserve Junior Champion honors went to Partee Furor Graceful, the winning spring heifer calf.
Premier Sire of the show was Giprat Belles Jade-ET. Premier Breeder and Exhibitor went to Ratliff Jerseys of Garnett, Kan.
Judge Hank Van Excel of Lodi, Calif., and Associate judge Joey Airoso of Pixley, Calif., placed the 331 animals in the Central National Jersey Show.
Milking Shorthorn
Winning this year's International Milking Shorthorn Show at the 40th World Dairy Expo was Innisfail Bdc Stella 905. Stella was exhibited by Keith and Donnette Fischer of New Enterprise, Pa. She is sired by Bar-D Cindy's Clay and her dam is Innisfail Ot Stella 004-EXP. Stella was the winning aged cow.
Reserve Grand Champion honors went to the winning junior 3-year-old, Lands-Brook Christina-EXP-ET. Exhibited by Jesse Landsgard of St. Olaf, Iowa, Christina is a daughter of Kuszmar Affairs Othello-Red and her dam is Lands-Brook Christie. Christina was also chosen as Grand Champion of the Junior Show.
Holcombs Frolic Felicia-TW was named Junior Champion of the International Milking Shorthorn Show. The winning fall yearling heifer, Felicia was exhibited by Christine Holcomb of Sun City, Fla.
Reserve Junior Champion went to Smart Othello F Annie, exhibited by Lincoln Gibbs and Dana Sickles of Epworth, Iowa. Annie was the winning spring yearling heifer and was also named Junior Champion of the Junior Show.
Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show went to Dixon Dairy DO18, exhibited by Bryce Dixon of Cosby, Mont. She was the winning aged cow in the junior show.
Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior show was won by Michaels K-Clay Daisy, exhibited by Michael Maier of Stitzer. Daisy was the first prize winter yearling heifer.
The show's Premier Breeder was Innisfail Herd from Davis, Calif. Premier Exhibitor was earned b Hard Core Farm of New Enterprize, Pa. Premier Sire of the 2006 International Milking Shorthorn Show went to Kuszmar Affairs Othello-Red.
Callum McKinven of North Hatley, Quebec, Canada, judged the 234 entries in the International Milking Shorthorn Show.
Red & White
Honored as the Grand Champion of the 2006 Grand International Red & White Show was Yursden Kite Carmac-Red. Carmac was the first place 4-year-old cow and was exhibited by Richard Green, Sr., of Middletown, Del. She is sired by Markwell Kite-ET and her dam is Yursden TT Candy-Red-ET.
Snagging Reserve Grand Champion was Derrwyn Miss Special-Red-ET. Exhibited by Nathan and Adam Goldenberg and Tom Mercuro of Mcgregor, Texas, Special was the winner of the 5-year-old class. She is sired by STBVQ Rubens-ET and her dam is Derrwyn Factor Miata-Red.
Poor-Richs Rbns Aspn-Red-ET was named Intermediate Champion. She was the winning junior 2-year-old cow and was exhibited by Donald Rottinghaus of Seneca, Kan.
Reserve Intermediate Champion went to Miss Del-Hollow Jose-Red-ET, the second place junior 2-year-old. Jose was exhibited by Ernest Kueffner of Boonsboro, Md.
Junior Champion honors went to the first place fall heifer calf, Scenic-Edge Joyful-Red-ET. Joyful was exhibited by Stephanie Aves of Poplar Grove, Ill., and was also named Junior Champion of the Junior Show.
Driftline Redman Serene-Red was named Reserve Junior Champion Female. Serene, exhibited by Brian Hill and Kyle Bearor of Bristol, Vt., was the first place summer yearling heifer.
Grand Champion of the Junior Show was Tower-Ridge Rub Rosette-Red exhibited by Matt Henkes of Luana, Iowa. Rosette was the first place junior owned animal in the senior 2-year-old class.
Jo-Clar Rubens Goldie-Red was named Reserve Grand Champion of the Junior Show. Goldie was exhibited by Bobby Stilling of Cambridge, and was the junior-owned winner of the junior 2-year-old class.
Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show went to Sunny-Valley Ad Fizz-Red-ET, exhibited by Kyle Natzke of Fond du Lac. Fizz was the second place fall heifer calf of the junior show.
Premier Breeder was earned by Maple Lawn Farm, Tom Lyon of Westfield. Greenlea Farm, Richard Green, Sr. received Premier Exhibitor. STBVQ Rubens-ET was named Premier Sire of the show.
Judge Robert Fitzsimmons and Associate Judge Tim Abbott placed the 216 animals in the show.
Kingsmill Futurity
Animals in the Kingsmill Farm II International Futurity were entered as baby calves in hopes of becoming a great show cow as 3-year-olds. Champions in each breed were crowned during each of the respective breed shows to reappear after the naming of the Holstein Champion on Saturday morning. At this time, the representatives for each breed competed for the title of Overall Futurity Champion.
Rhineland Durham Amy-ET, the Holstein winner, was named Overall Futurity Champion. She was exhibited by Budjon Farms and Jason. Danhoff of Lomira.
Overall Reserve Futurity Champion went to Four M acres Furor Page-ET, the Jersey exhibited by Amber and Laura Elliott of Marshall.
Also in the running were Ski Pal Lot Kally, the Ayrshire winner exhibited by David and Allison Koss of Epworth, Iowa; Arthurst Barbro G Dahra-ET, the Brown Swiss winner exhibited by Arthurst Farm of Plato, Minn.; Four Winds Dee Sharp Design-ET, the Guernsey winner exhibited by Clark and Joy Vilter of Hartland; Twilite Janette's Cindy, the Milking Shorthorn winner exhibited by Lattire's Twilite Farm of Lawrenceburg; and April-Day D Burgundy-Red-ET, the Red & White winner exhibited by Ron and Wayne DeBuhr of Belmont.
Showmanship
The World Dairy Expo youth showmanship contest was again one of the most popular events for youth this year. The contest featured three age brackets with junior, intermediate and senior divisions with participants ranging from 9-18 years of age.
The junior division contest participants competed strictly in the showring. Placing in the top-ten this year are, in place order: W. Cyrus Conard, Sharon Springs, N.Y.; Crystal Siemers-Peterman, Cleveland; Brooke Clark, Cornish Flat, N.H.; Sean Perronne, Sheboygan Falls; Taylor Mohr, Glencoe, Minn.; Desiree Moat, Cuba City; Paige Hoesly, Brodhead; Lucas Moser, Dansville, Mich.; Paige Lyford, Roscoe, Ill.; and Taylor Leach, Linwood, Kan.
The intermediate division involved a showring competition as well as a 20 question written quiz. Winners this year included: Grace Shanks, Garden Prairie, Ill.; Matt Henkes, Luana, Iowa; Cassy Krull, Lake Mills; Katelyn Mohr, Glencoe, Minn.; Tyler Meyer, Darien; Stephanie LeMay, Brookfield; Tyler Dorn, New Glarus; Brett Hildebrant, Hustisford; Laura Finley, Lake Mills; and Courtney Perrone, Sheboygan Falls.
The senior division participants competed in both showring and clipping competitions. Winners included: Kelly Lee, Johnson Creek; Ashley Mergen, Glen Haven; Ross Dankers, Cambridge, Minn.; Trisha Stanek, Prairie du Chien; Bart Teeters, Lynn, Ind.; Sandra Kirchner, Clintonville; Amanda Mohr, Glencoe, Minn.; Maureen Lee, Johnson Creek; John Langel, McFarland; and Elizabeth Olson, Hutchinson, Minn.
Breed Sales
World Dairy Expo brings together the world's most elite dairy genetics and dairy cattle breeders, proving to be a perfect host to the world's top breed sales.
Wednesday afternoon the Top of the World Jersey Sale averaged $2,713 on 19 lots. Ron and Christy Ratliff of Garnett, Kan., consigned the high seller, Ratliff Sambo Elise. Wade and Nancy Kessenich of DeForest purchased Elise for $4,525.
The World Ayrshire Event Sale saw an average of $4,745, the highest average ever in the history of the sale. Right-Angle T Jump was the high-seller of the sale, going for $12,100 to T. Jump Partnership of Kent, Ill. Jump was consigned by Janine Wingert of Kent, Ill.
The World Premier Showcase Brown Swiss Sale sold its high seller at $16,000. Lo-Vi Cook EM Camay-ET was consigned by Andrew Daubert of Pine Grove, Pa., and purchased by Tim Navis of Brandon. The sale averaged $3,942 on 36 lots.
The International Guernsey Classic sale was topped by lot No. 1, Jens Gold C Blue Spruce. Spruce was consigned by Jens Gold Farm of Amery, who generously donated the proceeds to benefit the Guernsey Promotion Fund. Spruce was purchased by Genex and Blue Spruce Syndicate of Shawano. The sale averaged $3,256 on 21 lots.
Setting a record at this year's World Dairy Expo was Rosedale Advantaeous-Red-ET, the top seller at the 2006 World Classic Holstein Sale. Advantaeous was consigned by Mark Rueth and Nicky Reape of Rosedale Holsteins, Oxford, and purchased by Sterndale and Riverdane Holsteins of Boxton, Derbyshire, England for $135,000. The World Classic had its highest average ever at $17,695 on 41 lots.
